Human beings have always felt the elementary desire to decorate their bodies. On a basic level, they achieved this by painting or tattooing their skin. Besides, they adorned themselves with beautiful, but short-lived items like decorative flowers, colorful feathers, extraordinary seed-grains, or rolled palm leaves. The wish for ornaments of lasting value and beauty led to the use of shining metals. Necklaces and bangles are comparatively easy to produce, whereas earrings require a complicated mechanism to fasten them to a specifically created hole in the earlobe. Metal earrings can therefore be classified as a highly developed and sophisticated kind of ornament. (Source: Earrings. Ornamental Identity and Beauty in India by Waltraud Ganguly, 2007).
