Two chunky, red, shiny hearts to dangle by your side. In Jewellery Matters (published by Nai010 and the Rijks Museum in 2017) the authors, Marjan Unger and Suzanne Van Leeuwen, write: "When one surveys the many different motives for wearing jewellery, there is one aspect that stands out: jewellery's capacity to keep memories alive and to render emotions visible and tangible." They continue: "Memories are not so much about a nostalgic yearning for the past as about personal experiences. What's more, jewels stand a good chance of surviving their makers and original owners, at which point they might function as a memento for relatives. Anyone who delves into the history of their own family or in the context in which they live, is liable to find a reason for attributing emotional values to certain jewels."
