When one surveys the many different motives for wearing jewellery, there is one aspect that stands out: jewellery's capacity to keep memories alive and to render emotions visible and tangible. Memories are not so much about a nostalgic yearning for the past as about personal experiences. What's more, jewels stand a good chance of surviving their makers and original owners, at which point they might function as a memento for relatives.
